A logarithmic scale would also work…

Everyone has a smartphone these days, and SMS costs money while email data transfer is included. I can get my friends’ public Twitters in email via RSS, but can’t get Twitters from my friends who lock theirs.

Increasing the character count in twitter would be like increasing the syllable count in Haiku, and Haiku should not increase it’s syllable count.
